Part 2, Lesson 3

Explain Everything

Part Progress

In the Explain Everything strategy, the goal is to ensure that your child understands what’s going on in the world they live in, what to expect next, and why they need to do what they need to do. To achieve this, it’s essential to act as if your child already understands, and then simplify the information to ensure that it’s clear and easy to understand. By using this tool, you can help your child develop a better understanding of their surroundings and make more informed decisions as they navigate through life.

Watch the below videos to illustrate this strategy and make sure to download the supporting PDF workbook.

Something to ponder: A different brain means a different understanding so put yourself in their shoes – they don’t understand why people laugh, the don’t understand why you left the room the way you did, why they can’t use specific words, why they can’t be naked in front of people…

Lesson Takeaways

  • Your child doesn’t understand how the world works until you tell them
  • Repetition is necessary for them to learn so we must help them to know why they have to do what we are asking of them
  • Explain people’s emotions so they know whats going on in the world they live in
  • Act as if they understand and then simplify: they understand from your energy and gestures, just like a baby.  Find the meeting point where you understand each other
  • Talk with full sentences, express with verbs and adjectives and then simplify and get quiet
  • Be matter of fact: unemotional and factual, so your words can reach them
